Donald Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday made clear the deeply conservative positions held by his administration.

Amid hardline comments against immigration and a woman's right to choose, the president ignored a key issue both for the country, and the rest of the world: climate change.

Trump’s denial of this global threat are no secret to anyone, and waiting on his government to take action to address the environmental crisis is a futile hope.

With this as backdrop, the new Congresswoman from New York, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Thursday unveiled her first draft of a Green New Deal, a legislative proposal to abandon dependence on fossil fuels, and "transition to an eco-friendly lifestyle.”

Since the start of the 21st century, the Green New Deal has been an economic stimulus program proposal, stipulating sustainable development in the country focused on low gas emissions and minimal environmental impact.

This program has been part of important political campaigns such as Senator Bernie Sanders' 2016 presidential run, and Ocasio-Cortez's recent Congressional bid. 

Just days after arriving at the Capitol last fall, Ocasio-Cortez joined more than 200 climate change activists who "flooded” the office of the Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, to "demand that the Democrats act more decisively in terms of climate change.”

Ocasio-Cortez fully supported the movement's initiative, and assured that she would do something about it. She has begun to fulfill her promise just three months later.

In her initial 14-page proposal, the congresswoman introduced a non-binding resolution in which she asks the United States to "reach a zero level of greenhouse gas emissions over a period of ten years by drastically expanding and improving renewable energy sources.”

Moreover, as Ocasio-Cortez told NPR on Thursday, the program covers not only economic environmental development, but also promotes public measures in favor of access to housing, medical care, education, trade unions and indigenous rights.

"This is really about providing justice to the communities, and just transitions for the communities," she said. "So, really the heart of the Green New Deal is about social justice."

The young congresswoman is no stranger to social environmental struggles, having personally participated in protests against the Dakota pipeline just months before launching her candidacy for the House of Representatives.

However, no matter how noble her proposals may be, her struggle to achieve such a change in U.S. politics promises to be an uphill battle.

Even when she has the backing of important political figures - including Democratic presidential candidates such as Cory Booker, Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren - her proposal will surely hit a wall, against a Republican administration that has overstepped the limits of conservatism, in the hands of a president who withdrew the country from the Paris Climate Agreement, and who doesn’t seem to understand the basic concepts of environmental pollution.

Previous administrations, such as Barack Obama's, failed with attempts such as the "cap-and-trade" plan, and a proposal as bold as Ocasio Cortez’s will need much more than good intentions to reach a suitable compromise with President Trump's agenda.
