Olivia Julianna, a 19-year-old activist, and strategist was the subject of a smear campaign by Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz who body-shamed Julianna on social media, calling her “Dander raised.”

The activist used the traction gained from Gaetz’s comments to fundraise for abortion. Julianna, to date, has raised over $1 million in funds in a matter of 72 hours.

“I have struggled with eating disorders and body image issues my entire life,” Julianna said in a statement.

“Representative [Gaetz’s] comments were reprehensible, disgusting, and outright despicable, but I am glad he directed his bigotry in my direction. We have now turned hatred into healthcare, and people across the country will be able to get access to abortion services because of it,” Julianna reflected.

The comments stemmed from a right-wing event held by Turning Point USA, where, in a speech, Gaetz made disparaging comments at abortion activists.

“Why is it that the women with the least likelihood of getting pregnant are the ones most worried about having abortions?” he said.

“Nobody wants to impregnate you if you look like a thumb," Gaetz added.

Following the event, Gaetz, who is under federal investigation for sex trafficking among other alleged crimes, doubled down on Twitter, using a picture showing Julianna at a rally.

Following Gaetz’s disparaging remarks, Julianna responded by way of a fundraiser, often directing messages directly at the Representative.

Her story took off and made national headlines.

Julianna’s all-out battle with Gaetz via Twitter gave way to sizable funds for birthing persons around the country where, despite the legality, it is often difficult to access them

AL DÍA reached out to Julianna but did not receive a response for comment.
