Undergrad and Mexican? Apply for local scholarship

The Dr. Jose Castillo Scholarship will be awarded once again this year in recognition of an outstanding student of Mexican descent.
The Mexican Cultural Center (MCC) announced that applications for the scholarship will open this week. The fund will be awarded to the winning candidate during the Mexican Independence Day Festival on Sept. 14, 2014.
The recipient will receive $1,000 for undergraduate studies.
Originally from Mexico, Dr. Castillo arrived in Philadelphia in 1970 and lived in the city for almost 40 years.

Originally from Mexico, Dr. Castillo arrived in Philadelphia in 1970 and lived in the city for almost 40 years.
Among the community efforts he spearhead was the establishment of a free clinic in Kennett Square for Mexican migrant workers.  In the early 1980s, Castillo co-founded the Society of Ibero Latin American Medical Professionals and served on the board of the Mexican Cultural Center in Philadelphia.
The physician died in 2009, leaving behind a legacy of leadership in the community.

Requirements
-Be of Mexican descent
-Live in Pennsylvania, Delaware or New Jersey
-Send a copy of acceptance letter or a copy of your student ID from the school where you will be or are studying.
-Include a cover letter with your name, address, email, the name of your college and intended major.
-Send in an essay (minimum one page, maximum three pages) with a brief biography, your goals, ambitions and answers to the following questions:
What aspects of the Mexican culture you wish were better known by the local community?
What actions would you propose to help spread awareness about Mexican culture?
