Two suspects face murder charges for the killing of a transgender woman in Frankford section of North Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Police announced Thursday the arrests of 19-year-old Jose Pena and 24-year-old Tiffany Floyd, NBC10 reported.

Maya Young, 25, was found lying on the street with multiple stab wounds to her neck and chest around midnight on Feb. 20. Police rushed Young to Aria Frankford Hospital where she was later pronounced dead, according to NBC10.

“Transgender individuals...live this life as human beings, just as everyone else, and our lives matter. We lack adequate support with housing, employment, education, and medical services,” said Naiymah Sanchez, coordinator of the program Trans*‐health Information Project. “What we need to do to survive puts us in harmful situations.”

Sanchez added that violence against transwomen of color is peaking. “It’s sad to say it’s becoming the norm and even harder as a Transgender woman to wake up every day with the fear that someone may ultimately feel they want to take our life,” she said.

The staff at the Trans*‐health Information Project, a program of GALAEI, will host a transgender community discussion to talk about steps that can be taken to reduce violence against transgender individuals, the development of more resources, as well as plausible solutions to address the problem.

The event will be held on March 11 at 6 p.m. at the GALAEI’s offices, located at 149 w. Susquehanna Avenue.
