The Streets Department has canceled citywide trash pickup on Friday, Sept. 25 and Monday, Sept. 28 — the two days that bookend the Pope's weekend visit to Philadelphia.

"We understand your concerns and how this historic event will cause disruptions," said Streets Commissioner David J. Perri in a statement Wednesday. "Unfortunately, due to the immensity of the event, Streets Department resources will be strained with temporary disruptions to normal services. Our crews will be deployed to work the event for pre and post cleanup efforts."

Due to the inconvenience, the department said it would extend operation hours at the city's five Sanitation Convenience Centers (which you can find here). Normal hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. But those hours will be changed to 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. drom Tuesday, Sept. 22 through Sunday, Oct. 4 — days before and after the papal weekend. Also, the sanitation centers will be more flexible about trash limits, allowing 24 bags per vehicle and an unlimited amount of recyclable materials.

The Streets Department wishes to thank residents for their understanding, and asks that residents share this message with their neighbors.

"We understand that this once-in-a-lifetime moment may be an inconvenience for many people," Perri said. "We ask, however, for your patience, cooperation and Philadelphia spirit as we showcase our great City to the world."
