Parishioners from La Milagrosa, the first Latino church in the city, in conjunction with members from St. Joachim in Frankford, St. Laurentius in Fishtown, and St. Peter Claver in South Philly, will hold a "Walk For Justice" on Sunday Sept. 20 to stop what they consider “the indiscriminate sale of churches in Philadelphia.”
The group is inviting everyone and especially all the members of the recently closed parishes to participate on this event where they will be praying at each of the already merged or closed parishes.
“Today we continue to suffer but our spirit continues to battle for our faith, and to remember the second anniversary of these tragic events, parishioners from La Milagrosa, Saint Joachim, Saint Laurentius, and Saint Peter Claver will join in this 'Walk For Justice'” the group said.
At 3:22 p.m. there will be a prayer of remembrance and reflection at La Milagrosa (1903 Spring Garden St.) and then at 4:30 p.m. the procession will continue to its last stop of the journey at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul (1723 Race St).
Miguel Ortiz, activist and parishioner from La Milagrosa, and other members will begin a hunger strike at the 6:30 p.m. Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. The group stated the hunger strike will continue for an indefinite number of days or “until Archbishop Chaput accepts to have a meeting with the parishioners that are currently advocating for the future of their parishes.”
