While studies have shown that diverse workplaces outperform those that are less diverse, it is often a challenge to find workplaces that represent the communities they serve. But in an effort to highlight this fact and spread diversity throughout workplaces in Philadelphia, AL DIA News is hosting its 16th annual Diversity Career Fair.

Bringing Philadelphia’s top employers to a wide range of applicants unique to this type of event, what started as an event in a basement hotel now hosts over 35 prospective employers who are looking to tap into the hidden talent that the city has to offer.

With the likes of University of Pennsylvania, SEPTA, Aramark, Philadelphia International Airport, Philadelphia School District, AETNA, The Philadelphia Phillies, and other organizations, some of the largest employers in the area are set to attend this year’s installment of the event.

“We have a strong history of being the bridge that connects companies to their future multicultural and diverse workforce. The Philadelphia Diversity Career Fair, now in its sixteenth anniversary, aims to improve opportunities for both individuals and employers and support regional economic development,” says Ricardo Maldonado, Manager Special Programs & Strategic Alliances at AL DIA News.

But one attendee, in particular, knows the true value of hiring with intention and creating a diverse workforce. Mayor Jim Kenney has spoken openly about ensuring that the city’s employees properly reflect the community they serve. When speaking at the Women at the Top ceremony Mayor Kenney spoke openly about the intentional hiring practices he promotes in the Mayor’s Office and the City of Philadelphia, "We work hard to make sure the government looks like the community it serves and that includes hiring Latina Women," he said.

And the Mayor’s sentiments can be applied to private companies as well for both social and financial benefits. A study from McKinsey & Company shared that ethnically diverse workplaces outperformed their national peers financially by 35% while those with gender diverse outperformed their peers by 15%, making it clear that diversity is not only a benefit to companies as a concept but also for their bottom line.

“And this aim is one that aligns with not only the City of Philadelphia but also AL DIA we are always looking for creative ways to connect diverse cultures to build a stronger, move vibrant, more cosmopolitan Philadelphia,” says Maldonado.

This year's career fair will be hosted at the Pennsylvania Convention Center and start at 10 a.m.
