To honor of Black History Month, Taller Puertorriqueño will hold it’s annual Arturo Schomburg Symposium next weekend.

For the last nineteen years, the Schomburg Symposium has focused on exploring of the different aspects of the relationship between African diaspora and Latin American culture.

This year’s symposium will include presentations by distinguished scholars such as Dr. Herman L. Bennett, author of “Colonial Blackness: A History of Afro-Mexico” and “Africans in Colonial Mexico: Absolutism, Christianity, and Afro-Creole Consciousness, 1570-1640,” and Dr. Zaire Z. Dinzey-Flores, an Associate Professor of Sociology and Latino & Hispanic Caribbean Studies at Rutgers University, a Research Scholar at Penn Institute of Urban Research and author.

At the symposium, attendees will explore the “migratory challenges of Afro-Latinos in the Americas and how societal differences and geographic locations affect politics and civil rights,” according to Taller Puertorriqueño.

“Complete with a continental breakfast and lunch, the symposium is a full, thoughtful, stirring conversation and an excellent opportunity for the Latino and African American communities come together to engage in a new dialogue of interconnections and commonalities,” Dr. Carmen Febo-San Miguel, executive director of Taller Puertorriqueño, said.

Tickets can be purchased in advance before Wed,. Feb., 25th at tallerpr.org for $25, or for $30 at the door. Taller members and students, with I.D., will receive a 50 percent discount.

The “19th Annual Arturo A. Schomburg Symposium: Afro-Latinos on the Move: Migration, Civil Rights and Politics,” will take place Sat., Feb. 28th, 2015 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Taller Puertorriqueño’s Roberto P. Hernández Theater (2557 N. 5th Street).
