SEPTA officials have recently announced the extension of their weekend overnight service.

Over the summer, SEPTA patrons were able to ride on the Broad Street and Market-Frankford subway lines into the wee hours of the weekend mornings.

Since this restored service was so popular, SEPTA officials decided to extend the service indefinitely.

In the early 1990s, SEPTA stopped the late-night subway service due to cost and security. In its place, they offered "night owl" buses.

While the new overnight service has increased ridership, it has also increased costs. To insure safety, SEPTA increased police presence on the trains. The general operation of the service has also increased costs.

“Late night customers have proven, by riding in record numbers each weekend, that this is service they want," said SEPTA General Manager Joseph M. Casey in a statement. "SEPTA is proud to be part of Philadelphia's late night renaissance. That's why even with the increased costs we have decided to continue overnight service."
