Philadelphia Councilman Bill Greenlee has proposed a bill that would make it illegal to sell your public parking spot to another driver. The bill will prevent the sale of both metered parking spots and free street parking.
Greenlee says that people in other cities are using the mobile app MonkeyParking to auction off street parking spaces before they drive away. The free app allows people to announce where they are parked, and receive bids from people who want to park in that spot next. He says that MonkeyParking and similar apps are now being used in Philadelphia and wants them banned.
“There’s something just fundamentally wrong, in my opinion, with anyone selling what should be a free parking spot,” Greenlee told KYW Newsradio. “People should have the right to pull in freely. And it certainly can lead to a lot of problems, I think.”
Greenlee is introducing the bill today. If approved, the practice of selling a public parking space, through the mobile app or other ways, will be illegal and result in a $250 fine.
