It turns out Society Hill has nothing to do with high society and it was named after the Free Society of Traders established by William Penn. Powelton was the name of the Powel family mansion that gave this west Philadelphia neighborhood its name.
And Olney’s name was chosen by Alexander Wilson, great admirer of poet William Cowper who lived in Olney, England.
