Although usually visited as a haunted attraction during Halloween, the Eastern State Penitentiary has a much more historical significance. The prison was considered a new and revolutionary concept and later set the standard for how prisons should be made on a world-wide scale.
The prison was the first of its kind to have central heat, running water, and efficient plumbing throughout the complex. At that time, President Andrew Jackson had no running water in the White House and had to heat the building with coal-burning stoves.
