Pop-up Garden returns to South Street, adds new location
The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Pop Up Gardens will showcase a new look for its very popular PHS location on South Street.
The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) Pop Up Gardens will showcase a new look this year at its location on South Street. Returning for a third year at 15th and South streets, the garden will be operated by Khyber Pass Pub.
The garden will feature a selection of craft beers, cocktails, and a menu featuring food unique to South Philadelphia. Khyber Pass Pub is also planning a season of events spotlighting local and visiting brewers and special beers.
A new garden at the Viaduct Rail Park, at 10th and Hamilton streets, will raise awareness of the horticulture, history and new development being planned for the Reading Viaduct.
Working in collaboration with the Friends of the Rail Park and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, PHS is creating a Pop Up Garden adjacent to the rail line to inform and engage visitors on the significance of the rail park, which involves a rare combination of historic preservation, contemporary planning, and green advocacy.
The design of the garden at the viaduct is a merging of the overhead rail structure with green urban space and is led by artist Walter Hood. The design is inspired by railroad cars and remnants of what had been an abandoned site, and it seeks to engage visitors with the emerging ecology and cultural history of the rail line.
An opening celebration at the South Street location is planned for June 1 at 5:30 p.m, while PHS will host an opening celebration for its Viaduct Rail Park location on Friday, June 10, starting at 5:30 p.m.
