Leading up to Earth Day this Friday, volunteers for Plant One Million will plant 889 trees in Philadelphia and some surrounding townships.

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) Tree Tenders will have 28 groups of volunteer tree planters in the city to carry out the plantings. Plant One Million is a partnership led by PHS that unites the organization with the Delaware Center for Horticulture and the New Jersey Tree Foundation.

Matt Rader, president of PHS said for the Tree Tenders are local groups which identify areas in their neighborhoods which could be improved by planting young trees. For the most part, he said, these groups are made up of volunteers.

“It is very much a bottom-up strategy for communities to find themselves invested in where they live as well as a way for them to connect with other folks in the region,” said Rader.

The group seeks to boost the tree canopy size in the region to 30 percent. As the name implies, this roughly translates to planting one million trees. Urban-area development has led to the loss of millions of trees according to the group. Last fall, the 500,000th tree was planted to commemorate the visit of Pope Francis.

“Restoring the urban tree canopy can have many significant effects for the city and region,” said Rader. “It helps with sustainability, it has health benefits, it helps with beautification and can even help with improving emotional health for residents.”

The trees will be planted on Friday and Saturday throughout the city and three surrounding townships. Below is a map provided by PHS of the neighborhoods where the trees will be planted.
