Soon you’ll be able to pay for parking in Philadelphia with your smartphone.

The Philadelphia Parking Authority (PPA) has recently signed a deal with Pango USA, a mobile parking payment service, after reviewing proposals from five companies.

“The proposal from Pango provided the best consumer price, one cent per transaction, to encourage the highest level of participation,” PPA Executive Director Vince Fenerty said in a statement. “We believe the low cost and convenience of this app will greatly improve the convenience of paying for on-street parking in Philadelphia.”

Using the new app, drivers will be able to pay for parking, get alerts before the meter runs out and add more time to the meter. The amount of time one can add to the meter has yet to be determined by City Council, however the PPA stated it’s proposing that the rate to extend parking time after the time limit should increase.

Initially, customers will be able to use the app in the heart of Center City (4th to 20th Streets, Arch to Locust Streets as well as Columbus Blvd. from Spring Garden to Race Streets), the Torresdale Rail Station lot and the 8th & Chestnut Streets lot.  After a six month trial period, the PPA plans to expand usage of the app to the entire city.

The app is expected to be released by the end of summer.
