Parishioners of La Milagrosa, St. Joachim Frankford, Notre Dame de Lourdes and Swarthmore are planning a demonstration outside the Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul to protest the Archdiocese of Philadelphia's Parish Pastoral Plan.
"The plan is flawed, resulting in closures of churches that were financially solvent and viable. There was no real inclusion of the parishioners in this process and no efforts made to seek other means of dealing with the Archdiocese's financial woes," said the coalition of Catholics in a statement.
The protest will take place Sunday, Sept. 21 at 6:15 p.m., just before the 6:30 pm Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul, located at 1723 Race Street.
"More than 40 churches have been closed or merged in the last 13 months. These closures greatly affected both city and suburban churches," the coalition said in a statement. "At a time when Archbishop Chaput is preparing to welcome the world's families to the World Meeting of Families Week in 2015, he refuses to meet and talk with the families of the Philadelphia Archdiocese.”
