Pennsylvania House approves cigarette tax
The Pennsylvania House of Representatives approved the $2 per pack cigarette tax to fund Philadelphia schools.
The Pennsylvania House of Representatives has approved a $2 per pack cigarette tax to fund Philadelphia schools. The legislature’s approval is next step towards another $83 million in yearly revenue, half of which could come in the first year.
An earlier version of the bill included other, unrelated provisions. This version includes just the cigarette tax, and passed on Sept. 22, 114 to 84. The Senate and Governor must approve the tax before schools see any revenue. If the bill doesn’t pass, the school district has warned that there will be another round of layoffs.
Philadelphia schools opened this year with an $81 million deficit, overcrowded classrooms and a staff devoid of full-time nurses, counselors, and creative and performing arts teachers.
