Michael Nutter, the Mayor of Philadelphia, wants more city police officers using cameras. The project, tested up to now by 30 volunteer police officers, in one of the districts north of Philly, may become a reality next year.
For such reason, Nutter has reserved $500,000 of his 2015-2016 budget for the purchase, storage and installation of 450 body cameras. According to that stated by Charles Ramsey, Philly Police Commissioner, by testing this new technology “we have learned a lot”. “We want to use them throughout the city. We will need three or four years for their full implementation”, Ramsey insured, according to that published by PhillyMag.
In order to choose the best model, the Philly Police have tested cameras from seven different manufacturers. The viewpoint of the officers has also been important in evaluating the use of the cameras. “We have been talking with the police officers and listening to their opinion regarding which is easier to use and which they consider to be the best.”
A few days ago, the taskforce created by Obama and co-chaired by Ramsey to reduce crime and build public trust, recommended promoting the use of cameras by the police force. For his part, President Obama warned that this measure is in no event about “the panacea”, though he acknowledged the role played by technology “in building trust and social responsibility”.
