Like many other candidates, former councilman Frank Rizzo Jr. had a change of heart and announced he won’t run for mayor next year and, instead has set his political sights on City Council.

Chris Brennan of the Daily News reported that the former Republican councilman at-large is ready to announce his comeback to the Council Chambers.

Rizzo Jr. was first elected to a Philly City Council At-Large seat back in 1995,  defeating Councilwoman Joan Specter, wife of then-U.S. Senator Arlen Specter. He easily won re-election as councilman at-large in 1999, 2003, and 2007.

His winning streak came to an end when GOP primary voters ousted him in 2011 because of his participation in the Deferred Retirement Option Plan (DROP), Brennan reported.

Although he served in city council for 16 years as a Republican, Rizzo Jr. began his career as a Democrat. CBSLocal reported he switched to the Republican Party when his father Frank Rizzo, the two-term Democratic mayor, became a Republican to run for mayor again in 1987.

Rizzo Jr. changed his party registration once more, to Independent, after losing his re-election bid, and in November of last year made the headlines again as he announced that he was joining the Democratic Party.

“I switched my party to be supportive of my father when he needed my vote in a Republican primary,” Rizzo Jr. said in 2013, “but even in my governing, my politics, I thought more like a Democrat.”
