Earlier this week, Temple University’s Department of Public Safety officially launched a safety app, TUSafe.

It replaces RAVE Temple Guardian, which was launched in February 2022 as the university’s prior safety app.

TUSafe is a one-touch personal safety app that will be available on mobile devices. It retains all of the features that were available in RAVE Temple Guardian — including the ability to chat with or call Temple Police, call 911 or start a virtual safe walk — as well as enhanced features.

With TUSafe, you can report crimes, provide emergency contacts, access real-time tracking for FLIGHT, Temple’s fixed-route shuttle loop service that transports students around the main campus patrol zone; and access the university’s walking escort service.

“We are happy to enhance safety resources for our Temple community with the TUSafe app, and we encourage everyone to download it and become familiar with its capabilities,” said Jennifer Griffin, vice president for public safety, to The Temple News

The switch from Guardian to TUSafe came following months of research undertaken by Temple’s former director of emergency management, Nicola Mammes.

After meeting with colleagues at other peer institutions, she gained a better understanding of safety technology and how it could help the Temple community.

By including new features while retaining the former app’s full functionality, TUSafe allows users to have a one-stop shop for safety information and intervention, making it easier to use.

“This app has the ability to keep Temple students, faculty and staff connected to public safety and resources, but for that to happen, our community members have to take the first step in adding the app to their mobile devices,” Griffin added.

Overall, TUSafe provides a user-friendly experience that translates to better safety on campus, with less confusion about how to stay safe, get around and call for help.

To use the TUSafe app, first download the app by searching “TUSafe” in the Apple App Store for iPhones or the Google Play Store for Android users. Once installed, students can login using their AccessNet username and password and the app will be ready to use.

To help encourage the Temple community to move from RAVE Temple Guardian to TUSafe, Information Technology Services will be sending push notifications directly to Guardian users, encouraging them to download the new app.

However, Temple students, faculty and staff will still be able to access RAVE Temple Guardian through the end of September 2023.
