This week the Mexican Consulate in Philadelphia is holding a week-long financial education event at their offices at The Bourse Building. 

Part of an initiative spanning Mexican consulates all over the country, the week seeks to provide information for Spanish-speaking immigrants in Philadelphia on personal finance. 

“The objective of the series of events that we have prepared is for immigrant workers to know and take advantage of the benefits in the American financial system,” said Carlos Giralt, consul of Mexico in Philadelphia.

The event kicked off on Monday with sessions on establishing credit, taxes, dealing with the IRS and other topics. Organizations like the Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Office of Immigrant Affairs and financial institutions like Bank of America and Santander Bank are assisting by holding workshops or informational sessions. It will continue through Sunday. 

The consulate said most of the event is being conducted in Spanish and is open to all immigrants. Giralt said the consulate also hopes to establish partnerships with local banks and organizations to continue financial education in the Mexican and other immigrant communities. This also includes promoting small business and community development.
