Low-Income older Philadelphians can apply for $20 fresh food vouchers

Last year, around 36,750 older Philadelphians purchased fresh fruits and vegetables for free at local farmers' markets thanks to the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program implemented by both the U.S. and the Pennsylvania Departments of Agriculture. Now, low-Income older Philadelphians can apply again.
The Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA) will begin the distribution of $20 food vouchers on July 6 at its headquarters. Eligible seniors will receive four $5 vouchers which can be used to buy fresh Pennsylvania-grown products at different certified Farmers’ Markets in Philadelphia.
Philadelphia residents who will be age 60 or older by December 31 are eligible for the program. Seniors have also to meet an economic criteria: their 2014 household income must not exceed $21,775 for one person; $29,471 for two people; $37,167 for three people and $44,863 for four people.
Eligible residents can get their vouchers at the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (642 North Broad Street) weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The other designated distribution site is the Reading Terminal Market (12th and Arch Street), where seniors can get the vouchers July 8 and 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
To get the vouchers seniors have to present a proof of age and of Philadelphia residency. A sign-in, in person or through a proxy, is mandatory and the vouchers can only be received once a year.
For more information about the program or other designated distributions points you can call the PCA helpline: 215-765-9040.
