Artists, organizations and policy makers came together on Wed., Nov. 12, to discuss the arts economy of Philadelphia, and one statistic stood out — 96 percent of foundation art investment goes into wealthy neighborhoods.

That’s according to research presented by University of Pennsylvania Professor Mark Stern. Stern was one of the creators behind Culture Blocks, an interactive online tool that maps things like resources and arts-related investments. By the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Philadelphia Cultural Fund. Stern’s research also shows that art and cultural investment is vital to social wellbeing.

Art investment in the city has long been heavily concentrated in Center City rather than neighborhoods where more Black, Latino and Asian residents live.

Leaders in organizations like Fleisher Art, Asian Arts Initiative and Painted Bride Art Center discussed what the city and its arts community could do to better represent and highlight Philadelphia’s diverse communities. Here’s a Twitter summary of the discussion, hosted by the Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy:
