The FBI quietly arrested a 15-year-old boy outside of Philadelphia last month for allegedly threatening to launch an ISIS-inspired assault on Pope Francis during his visit to United States.

According to a joint intelligence bulletin by the FBI and Department of Homeland Security issued on Aug 14:

“The minor was inspired by [ISIS] and sought to conduct a detailed homeland attack which included multiple attackers, firearms, and multiple explosives, targeting a foreign dignitary at a high-profile event.”

The “foreign dignitary” mentioned in that bulletin is the Pope, ABC News reports. “The minor obtained explosives instructions and further disseminated these instructions through social media,” according to the joint intelligence bulletin.

ABC News also reports that the teen's plans were "aspirational" rather than imminent but it adds that officials also have questions about the boy's mental health.

The boy has been charged with attempting to provide material support to a terrorist organization and attempting to provide material support to terrorist activity.
