The names of Sgt. Robert Wilson III and Firefighter Lt. Joyce Craig were added to the monument this year.
Sgt. Wilson, 30, was killed while stopping a robbery in a North Philadelphia GameStop store on March 5. In honor of Sgt. Wilson, the Police Department's Medal of Valor was renamed after him.
Lt. Craig, 36, died while fighting a house fire in West Oak Lane on December 9, 2014. Lt. Craig is the Fire Department's first female to die in the line of duty.
To honor the deceased police and firefighters, city officials and police and fire department representatives laid special wreaths on the memorial. The families and colleagues of the fallen police and firefighters placed carnations at the Living Flame Memorial to pay tribute to those who have died over the years. Other ceremonial activities took place like a “Rendering of Honors” (a rifle salute, The Last Alarm, Taps and Amazing Grace) and the release of three doves.
Overall, about 500 deceased Philadelphia firefighters and police officers were honored at the Living Flame Memorial Service.
