Dilworth Park kicked off their new Farmers’ Market on May 27.

This summer, various vendors will set up shop in the Center City park to sell fresh food directly from farms, every Wednesday from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm

For the opening day of the Farmers’ Market, three vendors were in attendance: McCanns Farm, Philly Bread and La Divisa Meats.

McCanns Farm, a third generation farming family in Elk Twp., NJ, used to take part in the Farmer’s Market in City Hall Courtyard four years ago before the construction of Dilworth Park.

“As soon as we found out that we could come back, we jumped right on it. We have customers that haven’t seen us in four years that came just for this,” said Anita McCann.

On the opening day, the farm offered strawberries, asparagus, honey, flower seedlings, and more. Throughout the summer, the farm will offer tomatoes, sweet corn, peppers, cucumbers, peaches, etc.

McCanns Farm participates at various farmers’ market throughout the city, including one at 4th and Lehigh in North Philadelphia, and accepts Pennsylvania ACCESS cards, WIC, and major credit cards, in addition to cash.

La Divisa Meats, a house-made Charcuterie & butcher shop, is located in Reading Terminal Market. The butcher shop gets its humanely-raised meats from local farms.

At the farmers’ market, the shop offered items such as liver paté, lamb paté, deli style meats (salami, ham, etc) and meals to-go like Mexican carnitas and various sausages.

La Divisa Meats is hoping to participate in the Dilworth Park Farmers’ Market all summer.

Philly Bread, a wholesale bakery located on 5th Street in the Olney section of Philadelphia, is best known for their signature product, the “Philly Muffin.” The “Philly Muffin” is their take on an English muffin, using mild sourdough and grains that are milled in-house.

In addition to the “Philly Muffin,” their table at the Farmers’ Market sold cinnamon sugar donuts made from brioche dough and Rosemary Focaccia.

“We’re not regulars at Farmers’ Markets. This is the first season we started doing it,” Matthew Plaks, a partner and baker at Philly Bread, said.

About two weeks ago, the bakery started participating in Rittenhouse Farmers’ Market and it’s working out pretty well for them.

“Being wholesale, we sell to chefs and grocers, and different things like that. It’s great and we know our bread is good, but it’s wholesale so we don’t get to see people eating our bread,” Plaks said. “The farmers’ markets are awesome because you sell the bread to people right there and they eat it in front of you and come back for more. It’s really rewarding to get that experience and customer interaction.”

The Dilworth Park Farmer’s Market will run through September 30.
