The Council of Spanish Speaking Organizations (Concilio) announced that the organization is a finalist in the 2014 “Aetna Voices of Health” national campaign.

All of the 31 finalists promote wellness locally by fighting conditions like asthma, diabetes and childhood obesity, which affect people of color at higher rates.

“Voices of Health” was created in 2011 to honor groups that share its goals of closing racial and ethnic healthcare inequality gaps and helping people lead healthier lives. The campaign is part of its support of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project.

Aetna will award $30,000 to the group that gets the most online votes and $20,000 to the second-place finisher. Voting for the campaign takes place at www.aetnavoicesofhealth.com and goes through Nov. 9.

“We are thrilled to be named a finalist in the ‘Aetna Voices of Health’ campaign,” said Concilio executive director Joanna Otero-Cruz. “We provide such a wide array of services to the Latino population in Philadelphia, and this is a great opportunity to showcase the important work we do.”

Concilio is the oldest Latino organization in Philadelphia, and has established itself as a leader in providing Latino family services. The organization’s programs include social, education, cultural and health services tailored to the Philadelphia community, including teen health programs, immunization outreach and parenting skills classes.

“To be listed among the 31 ‘Voices of Health’ finalists is a great honor, but now we have to campaign hard to be the top vote-getter,” Otero-Cruz said.  “The $30,000 grand prize will greatly benefit our programs and customers, and we appreciate the community’s support. Please share our video and campaign through social media.”
