A North Philly organization, Iglesias Unidas, will offer a series of free workshops for the community so residents can learn more about local government and form ideas to make their neighborhoods stronger.

The workshops will be conducted in collaboration with Philly Rising,  part of the managing director’s office, which works with Philadelphia neighborhoods that require revitalization and social improvements.

Starting next Sept. 16 at 6 p.m., the workshops will be held at the Church of God of Prophecy, 2812 N. Front Street.

"It's an initiative to inform  and empower our residents about local government. The information will be provided in both English and Spanish," said Pastor Billy Cortes, founder of Iglesias Unidas.

The  North Philly organization unites the social efforts of more than 15 local pastors and their churches. The group's mission is to address various social problems facing the neighborhood through civic activities and community outreach.

"Residents have been responding very positively to our activities. They want to be part of the change," said Cortes. "I have heard they feel alone in the community with no leader who will listen and help them. Leadership has been almost nil."

The Citizens’ Engagement Academy will seat approximately 100 people. Participants will get to brainstorm new ideas for their neighborhood and will have the opportunity to network with others in the community who face similar challenges. To register one must attend the first session. Those who attend all seven workshops will receive a certificate from the city.

"I hope residents give themselves, and the city, a chance. We are calling this activity 'City Hall in El Barrio,'" Cortes said. "I hope they stop waiting for someone else to solve their problems, because neither the mayor nor the state reps live in these blocks. It is our responsibility to raise and restore our own area."
