Philadelphia Archbishop Charles Chaput said that Pope Francis has accepted the city's invitation to attend the 2015 World Meeting of Families, according to Catholic Philly. However, ABC 6 Action news reported that a Vatican spokesperson told the station otherwise.

Vatican spokesman Father Frederico Lombardi told Catholic Philly that Pope Francis is considering a visit to New York, the United Nations and Washington — and possibly even a trip to Mexico. However, Vatican officials have since reiterated that Pope Francis may not visit Philadelphia, as the trip is unconfirmed.

A papal visit next year would potentially be Francis' first visit to the United States as Pope. City officials have said that they were planning for the Pope's visit, whether confirmed or not, during the World Meeting of Families, an international, interfaith event that is expected to attract hundreds of thousands, and possibly a million if the Pope visits and says an outdoor mass. 

In a May press conference, city officials said that the Vatican did not intend to confirm the visit until March of 2015.
