Carnavaleros could open the Mummers Parade next January
Aunque los detalles aun están en proceso de organización, ya es un hecho que alrededor de 150 carnavaleros se unirán al desfile anual de los Mummers el próximo…
Although details are still in the making, it is official that 150 “carnavaleros” will join the annual Mummers Parade next January.
David Piña, president of the nonprofit "San Mateo Carnavalero," told AL DÍA that the group had long had the aspiration to participate in the Mummers parade, a Philadelphia tradition for more than 100 years.
"Our organization's dream is to participate in the Broad Street parade as an honor: to represent our identity as Mexicans, so that we are not considered ‘criminals’ or as ‘not good’ for this country," Piña said. "We come to this country to work, and bring our cultural richness.
He said the invitation to participate in the annual parade was a surprise. Jesse Engaard, captain of the Rabble Rousers Mummer brigade, was who formally invited members of "San Mateo Carnavalero" to be part of the celebration back in April.
Piña added he is very grateful to the organizers for the opportunity to join the Mummers. "Another thing that surprised us is that we will have our own spot in the parade, something that made me very happy," Piña said. "Being the first time we participate, I believe is possible we will open the parade."
"San Mateo Carnavalero" will held its tenth edition in Philadelphia next year. It is a tradition originally brought from Huejotzingo, in Puebla, and is one of the best known festivals of the Mexican state. The first Carnival of Huejotzingo was held in 1868 and has inspired the tradition of many other carnivals.
Currently “San Mateo Carnavalero" is registering those who would like to take part in the Mummers Parade. This is open to men, women and children who want to be part of this historic moment.
"In addition to having the proper carnival attire, The requirements are to be eager to participate, to come with the best intentions and to make Mexico proud," Piña said.
He also stressed the importance of registering early to avoid any inconvenience. "Everyone is welcome as long as they are registered, we want to have an orderly process so we show the city we can be part of this and we can do things properly," he said.
The group will cover expenses and the cost for their participation, about $50 per participant. Only adults will pay a fee, children 10 years and under can participate at no cost.
