A Latino, new CEO of VIA Transit in Texas for the First Time
Jon Gary Herrera to Take Office at VIA on January 4. This agency is one of the leading mobility providers in the San Antonio region.
For the first time in its 46-year history, VIA Transit will have a Latino president and CEO. Jon Gary Herrera will assume leadership on January 4, 2025, following his unanimous selection by VIA's Board of Trustees in November 2024. Herrera will succeed Jeffrey C. Arndt, who led the agency for 13 years.
Under Arndt's leadership, VIA was recognized three times as "Texas’ Outstanding Metropolitan Transit Authority." Herrera, who has served as VIA's Senior Vice President of Public Engagement since 2017, was chosen as the sole finalist. Among his achievements is the 2020 funding campaign for the "Keep SA Moving" plan.
Fernando Reyes, Chair of VIA's Board of Trustees, emphasized that Herrera is part of Arndt's legacy and a leader who will ensure the agency's continuity and progress. "The Board selected three impressive and capable internal candidates. Jeff leaves VIA stronger than he found it and with our heartfelt thanks," Reyes stated.
Herrera inherits an agency facing funding challenges but one that has achieved significant milestones, including the construction of the region's first rapid transit corridor, the "VIA Rapid" Green Line, and the implementation of a "Better Bus Plan" in 2025 to enhance major service routes.
"I am honored to have been chosen to lead VIA at a time of great progress and change," Herrera said. "Our Board and longtime CEO have paved the way for a more mobile future for our region. I am proud to be part of this mission and vision."
