One million Americans per year attempt suicide. According to American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, one American citizen dies by suicide every 12.95 minutes and more than 40,000 annually, which makes suicide the tenth leading cause of death in the country.

The younger you are, the worse the statistics. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for Americans between 10 and 24 years, and the fifth for those between 49 and 59.

Wyoming is the state with the highest suicide rate in the nation (29.66), followed by Montana (23.13), Alaska (23.00), New Mexico (21.21) and Colorado (20.27). The national suicide rate is 12.94. Pennsylvania’s is lower (12.90). Washington D.C (5.84) and New Jersey (7.70) have the lowest rate of suicide deaths.

Women are more likely to attempt suicide than men, but the statistics show that more men die by suicide (four men for every woman).

In terms of ethnicity, American Indian teens and young adults (between 15 and 24) are more likely to commit suicide (around 1.8 times the national average).

The suicide death rate among Latinos is one of the lowest in the country (around 5.00), the number increases significantly among young Latinas. The CDC reported in 2012 that 13.5 percent of Latinas in grades 9 through 12 attempt suicide that year.
