Nelly Jiménez-Arévalo, a U.S.-Venezuelan immigrant, becomes head of Immigration Affairs in Montgomery County
The new official has had a successful career in serving vulnerable populations with her foundation Aclamo.
Montgomery County announced the appointment of Nelly Jiménez-Arévalo as the first Director of Immigration Affairs. The move seeks to strengthen the county's outreach to the county's immigrant population of more than 100,000 people.
For nearly a decade, Jiménez-Arévalo served as Executive Director and CEO of ACLAMO, a non-profit organization that provides educational and social services to the Latino community and other groups in Montgomery County. Her experience in community leadership and her work with diverse populations were determining factors in her selection for the new position.
"I am excited to have Nelly Jimenez-Arevalo join Montgomery County as our Director of Immigration Affairs. She has been a community leader in this area for over 20 years and will be a great asset to the county and its residents," stated Neil K. Makhija, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners.
What functions will it perform?
The new office is intended to ensure that all immigrants, refugees and newcomers to the county have access to available resources. Among its primary functions is to collaborate with community organizations to expand the reach of services.

Jamila Winder, vice chair of the Board of Commissioners, highlighted the importance of the role: "Montgomery County recognizes the challenges many immigrant families face, from navigating complex legal systems to discrimination and economic barriers. With decades of experience, Nelly Jiménez-Arévalo is a committed advocate for expanding access to essential resources. As Director of Immigration Affairs, she will lead initiatives to connect our communities to housing solutions, legal assistance, job development and other services."
The office will not have the function of influencing immigration policies at the federal level. Its mission will focus on inclusion and equitable access to local services.
Jimenez-Arevalo assumes the position with a commitment to strengthen the integration of immigrants into the civic and economic life of the county. "I am honored to join the county as Director of Immigration Affairs and continue working to empower our diverse communities," she said. "My journey from Caracas to Norristown began 27 years ago. Since then, I have dedicated my life to ensuring that all who make Montgomery County their home feel welcome and have the support they need to thrive."
This decision shows the county's interest in making life easier for immigrants and providing them with better services at a time when this population is under siege by the federal policies of the central government.
