Angelo Walker always knew that he wanted to be a barber.

However, it wasn't until his mother bought him his first set of hair clippers that he became hands-on in the skillset.

He began cutting his nephews’, family’s, and friend’s hair for free so he could teach himself how to give different haircuts and fades, including low fades, mid fades, and high top fades.

“I love giving haircuts to people, it makes me feel good,” Walker said in an interview with AL DÍA News.

At just 19, Walker has an impressive Instagram account with countless pictures of him showing off his hair cutting skills.

The North Philly native recently joined fellow barber, Mike Diced, to provide free haircuts to locals in Philly.

This happened at the Stop The Violence Teen Pop up Shop in Mantua, West Philly, and was hosted by the nonprofit, youth-led organization, Dimplez For Dayz.

The organization was launched in 2016 by founder, Akayla Brown. She created the organization as a way to show people the talent and creativity that can come out of Philly.

Diced and Walker were in attendance and gave haircuts to locals for free.

Walker said this event gave him inspiration to do more for the community.

“We plan on doing them way more often for Dimplez for Dayz,” Walker said. “If you look good you feel good, which is important too when you are going to a job interview.”

He also teamed up with Empowering Cuts and helped Joshua Santiago with giving out free haircuts to the homeless.

In addition to free haircuts, he is also working alongside Cleaves and his mentor, Faheem, at Faheem’s barbershop in South Philadelphia.

Walker admits that his mentor, Faheem, is responsible for the current success that he has working as a barber.

When Walker began cutting hair and improving his skills, he met Faheem through Instagram where he asked him if he could teach him more about the profession.

“The next day he picked me up from my house and he gave me new clippers and everything I needed to cut hair,” he said.

One year later, Walker is working beside him at Faheem’s Hands of Precision.

He admits that the business is also an open space for men to talk about current events, including Philly sports and the gun violence that is currently plaguing the city.

“The shop is always a safe space, we always talk about a lot of things, a whole lot,” said Walker.

Although Walker is still learning about hair styling, he has other teens coming up to him and asking if he could teach them.

“It's crazy because I'm still learning,” he said.

Walker hopes to one day create a GoFundMe page so he can give more free haircuts to kids and the less fortunate.
