He episcopal ordination of Monsignor Winston Mosquera Moreno, the first Afro-Colombian bishop, marks a milestone in the history of the Catholic Church in the country. This event has been highlighted as an important step towards inclusion and representation of Afro-Colombian communities, historically marginalized both in society and within the Church.

The consecration ceremony, which took place on September 14, 2024, at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Cali, was filled with symbolism and attended by religious leaders and political figures, including Vice President Francia Márquez. Mosquera Moreno took on the role of Bishop of Quibdó, a region marked by violence and armed conflict, and he has expressed his commitment to seeking peace in the Chocó region, one of the areas most affected by war in Colombia.

OBISPO AFROCOLOMBIANO

Since his appointment by Pope Francis, Bishop Mosquera has emphasized the importance of overcoming racial prejudices and fostering closer ties with Afro-descendant communities. His experience, which includes years of pastoral work in Cali and Robles, as well as his leadership in inclusion processes within the Church, positions him as a key figure in promoting reconciliation and social justice in Colombia.

This appointment is significant not only for its historical symbolism but also for the pastoral challenges it presents in leading a diocese in one of the country’s poorest and most violent regions. The new bishop has made clear his intention to be an instrument of peace, traveling the rivers and jungles of Chocó to connect with the most vulnerable communities.
