The Old Ways is a low-budget film that has made the most of its initial idea and tells it in an honest way with great atmospheric capacity. The director managed to transform the limitations of space and resources into one of the positive features of the film's mise-en-scène.
Although almost the entire story takes place inside the small room where the protagonist is kidnapped, producers use resources such as shots in natural settings, that generate the necessary contrast for the story to breathe.
The protagonist, Cristina, in her eagerness to investigate witchcraft, defies the warnings she receives and decides to enter a sacred cave called La Boca to gather information for a report. Inside, she loses consciousness and wakes up as hostage of a witch named Luz (Julia Vera), her assistant Javi (Sal López) and Miranda (Andrea Cortés), who she met before and will try to convince to help her escape.
The three are convinced that Cristina has been possessed by Postehki's demon and the only way to free her from his evil influence is to perform an exorcism.
Horror buffs quickly identified the setting as a mythical place in Mexico, known for the witchcraft beliefs and practices, and cleansings practiced by the locals.
