And the Oscar goes to… ¡Encanto!
The movie 'Encanto,' inspired by Colombia, won the award for Best Animated Film at the 2022 Oscars.
Several weeks ago, Encanto, a movie based on the magical Colombia reflected in the masterpiece One Hundred Years of Solitude by Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez, was positioned as the favorite to win Best Animated Film at the Oscars.
Its victory at the BAFTAs further cemented it in one of the most watched categories at the Academy Awards. The bets were right — the Disney film won the award in the category, beating productions like Flee, Luca, The Mitchells Against the Machines and Raya and the Last Dragon.
Encanto was nominated in two other categories: Best Song (for “Dos Oruguitas” written by Lin-Manuel Miranda) and Best Soundtrack, by Germaine Franco. These awards went to Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell's “No Time To Die”; and Hans Zimmer for Dune's soundtrack, respectively.
The animated film, which premiered in U.S. theaters in November 2021, tells the story of the Madrigal family who lives in a town called Encanto nestled in a mountainous region of Colombia. Each of the inhabitants of the town has a magical ability that is used to help the community,
The main character of the story is Mirabel, and the other members of her family — her grandmother Alma, her parents, Julieta and Agustín, the sisters, Isabela and Luisa, her uncles, Félix and Pepa, and her cousins Dolores, Camilo and Antonio. There is also Bruno, Mirabel's uncle, whom no one can talk about.

Besides being a hit at box office with a collection of $250 million, Encanto has been a musical revolution that Disney has not experienced in the last 30 years. One of its songs, “Dos Oruguitas,” performed at the Oscars gala by Colombia's Sebastián Yatra, has become a hit on the Billboard list for several weeks in a row in the first months of the year.
The other song from the animated production — "We Don't Talk About Bruno" — has remained at number one on the Billboards for a long time and is the most-watched on YouTube. “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” was also a hit on TikTok, where it has been used for dances, live shows, and cosplays.
Encanto is directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard and co-directed by Charise Castro Smith. It is available on the Disney+ streaming platform.
