Actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas and her husband, musician and actor Nick Jonas were in charge of revealing  the nominations for the 2021 Academy Awards on March 15. Competitors in the 23 categories were announced through the academy's social media channels.

What are the surprises this year?

For the first time in the 93-year history of the Oscars, two women are nominated for "Best Director": Chloe Zhao is nominated for Nomadland, and Emerald Fennell is competing in the same category for Promising Young Woman. Until now, only five female directors had been nominated for the statuette, of which, Kathryn Bigelow has been the only winner (2010) in history.

Netflix's Mank leads the list of films with 10 nominations, followed by The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, Nomaland, Minari, Sound of Metal, and The Trial of the Chicago 7, all with six nominations. Emerald Fennell's Promising Young Woman also positioned has five nominations of its own.

Following the debate on inclusion and diversity at the Oscars, in 2021, there are two women of African descent competing for "Best Actress": Viola Davis for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and Andra Day for her performance in The United States vs. Billie Holiday. Three people of African descent are also competing for "Best Supporting Actor": Leslie Odom Jr. for One Night in Miami and Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield for Judas and the Black Messiah

Representing Latin America, the Chilean film El Agente Topo, competes for best documentary with Collective, Crip Camp, Lo que el pulpo me enseñó and Time
