Wisin and Yandel are known as “the duo of history.” This pair of reggaeton artists from Puerto Rico, with a 20-year career — interrupted for five years in 2013 — are true icons of the genre.

Their trophy cabinet of awards includes a Grammy, two Latin Grammys, 10 Latin Billbord Awards and an MTV Video Music Award. Now, the Presidential Award from Broadcast Music Inc (BMI) will soon be added. The broadcasting rights organization will recognize their achievements and contributions to Latin music over their two-decade career.

In an official statement issued by BMI, Wisin and Yandel were described as "the pioneers of reggaeton and winners of multiple awards." Both will be honored at the 29th edition of the awards sponsored by the organization, which will take place on March 15 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

Jesús González, creative vice president of BMI, said that “Wisin and Yandel are authentic innovators of reggaeton and urban music. Their music transcends generations and has influenced many artists of all genres, which has helped push Latin music forward.”

Therefore, "we are delighted to finally be able to come together and present this outstanding honor to the duo of history, whose undeniable connection and talent have won them legions of fans around the world," he added.

The duo will join other Presidential Award winners, such as Carlos Vives, Gloria Trevi, Juanes, Luis Fonsi, Mario Quintero, Pitbull and Sergio George, among others.

The award could be the last triumph of their career, as at the end of 2021, the duo announced they would separate. With the album La última misión, which will be released in the Spring, the artists said that "it was necessary to close this cycle correctly."

Unlike their previous separation, this one is definitive, with an indefinite reunion. Both have said they will continue solo careers. According to them, it is due to “personal reasons.”

For Wisin, after "so many years of joint sacrifice," the time has come to close this chapter that united their careers and lives in a big way.

“I will always be involved in music. Retirement is never going to happen. What I do is what I love, which is not work, but something I enjoy,” he said.

For his part, Yandel noted that the duo's farewell album and tour were prepared before the pandemic, and they waited for COVID restrictions to be relaxed to make the announcement.

“We have energy left, and we will see what happens. We are addicted to music and we will move on,” they said.

The duo's fans were able to listen to a preview of their latest album, Recordar, which was produced by the famous DJ David Guetta. Wisin and Yandel define it as “a refreshing style, in which we bring back memories of what Wisin and Yandel are.” The rhythm moves away from its classic reggaeton, and is closer to Afrobeat, although with glorious and penetrating choruses.
