Once a month, the City of Philadelphia Department of Human Resources aggregates all of its employee data. There are about 55 departments within the city, which range from elected officials on City Council to your local fireman. As of June 2015, the city employs 30,580 people. Here's a primitive run-down of the racial diversity:

Asian: 3 percent

Black: 48 percent

Latino: 6 percent

White: 42 percent

Other/Mixed: 1 percent

N/A: 1 percent

Yes, these watered-down demographic terms that don't really capture the city's true multiracial diversity. But from a distance, the figures still tell us something. Municipal employment of self-identifying Blacks and whites meet —  and exceed — their resident populations. Those of Asians and Latinos, however, remain lower than by more than half. The 2013 census data puts Philly's Latino population at 13 percent, and Asian at 7 percent.
