What is the 2021 Doreen Montalvo Scholarship?
If you're 30 years old and in the performing arts, you can apply for the "Do It Anyway" scholarship, a tribute to the Puerto Rican Broadway star.
The organization R.Evolución Latina has announced a new call for applicants for the 2021 "Do It Anyway" Scholarship, in honor of the late Broadway star, Doreen Montalvo, who saw doors and windows where others saw obstacles.
Born in the Bronx, but deeply-rooted in her Puerto Rican culture, Montalvo always dreamed of taking to the Broadway stage and fought for her dream until it came true. In the process, she became a symbol for Latin American creators and performers trying to make their way in a very competitive, but magical world.
For this reason, R.Evolución Latina, an organization created to transform society through art, has always felt inspired by Montalvo, an ardent defender of the power of theater and musicals to catapult talent and bring about change in individuals and groups, and is honoring her by supporting new generations of Latinx artists.
As the institution reported in the scholarship announcement: "For 12 years, Doreen taught acting and singing at the RL Children's Performing Arts Camp. Every year it was clear that she loved and inspired the campers and they loved her."
But her Broadway debut did not come early on. The star triumphed at the age of 44 as part of the cast of the Original Broadway Company (OBC) in the musical In The Heights, which will bring another namesake of hers to the screen this year in artist, director, and composer Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Montalvo also performed in On Your Feet!, The Story of Gloria and Emilio Estefan and Mrs. Doubtfire, and appeared on television shows such as Law and Order, Madame Secretary, and The Good Wife.
"The Doreen Montalvo Scholarship is not only a financial award, but also a mutual commitment by R.Evolución Latina to nurture and encourage the recipient to continue to dare to go above and beyond while working toward their dreams," the organization wrote.
A committee will select the nominee based on both their achievements and their character, leadership and desire to contribute to the world with their art.
The criteria for applying for the scholarship are as follows:
