Barcelona discovered last Summer, thanks to smartphone data, that 83% of daily trips in the city could be done via bicycle. In addition, they are journeys that would last a maximum of 45 minutes. In the last 15 years, the city has become almost a paradise for those who want to move on pedals.

The city has clear advantages for being a bicycle capital of the world. On the one hand, a pleasant climate without extreme temperatures in Summer or in Winter. The other advantage is a very high population density that shortens distances. Almost 16,000 inhabitants live in Barcelona per square kilometre, four times more than in Philadelphia.

Bicycles are experiencing a boom throughout Europe, from Amsterdam to Paris, where all the important points of the city are connected by bike lanes. Many of these roads have already been built in Barcelona and those that remain to be marked are already provided for in the city's budget.

To help all ages use the bicycle, one of the neighborhoods in the center of Barcelona has launched the Bicibus. It is a bike tour in which children and their parents participate, who all move together from school to school in the area. The children who attend that center stay in each school.

In recent times, companies that deliver packages in the last mile with bicycles have proliferated. Companies like Koiki employ people with intellectual disabilities who collect all the packages from different companies to be delivered to a neighborhood in a warehouse and distribute them via bicycle. Thus, delivery company vans are prevented from entering the streets, polluting them and making traffic denser.

The future of the city will come on two wheels, and probably, with better health among its citizens and visitors, who will do more sport and breathe less smoke.
