It has been nine days since Officer Jarrett Tonn shot at Sean Monterrosa five times, mistaking a hammer he was carrying for a loaded gun, and killing him. Tonn, who has now been placed on an administrative leave, had a history of shootings since 2015.

In the aftermath of the shooting, it took approximately 38 hours for the Vallejo Police Department to confirm his death. Police Chief Shawny Williams chalked the delay up to not having confirmation of Monterrosa’s death.

At a press conference last Wednesday, June 3, Williams added that “these are the facts as we know today.”

However, an ABC News7 report found that Monterrosa’s official time of death was an hour after Monterrosa was shot- at 1:31 a.m.

“Both the I-Team and Monterrosa's family have confirmed Sean Monterrosa's official time of death was 1:31 a.m. Tuesday, June 2nd,” said the news station

In the aftermath, California attorney general Xavier Becerra announced on June 7 that he is in agreement with the city of Vallejo and that there would be a review of the Vallejo police department in the aftermath of Monterrosa’s shooting.

“Our community is in pain and we must look for ways to both heal and move towards meaningful change,” said State Assembly member Tim Grayson in a statement released by his office.
