Philadelphia’s BlackStar Film Festival Returns August 3-6
The 6th edition of BlackStar Film Festival will start next Thursday August 3 and will last for three days, allowing Philadephia citizens to get a closer look at the latest visual production focused on the African community.
More than 60 film screenings, plus events and performances, will be shown at three locations in Philadelphia’s University City — Lightbox Film Center at International House Philadelphia, the Institute of Contemporary Art and Drexel University’s Pearlstein Gallery.
The Festival will kick off with the screening of Tourments D’Amour by French woman of color Caroline Jules. The 54-minute film follows siblings at lunch with their estranged father, as reported in Uwishunu.

Created six years ago, The Blackstar Film Festival is an annual celebration of the visual and storytelling traditions of the African diaspora and of global indigenous communities, showcasing films by black people from around the world.
“Our Theme for this year is "Resistance", which is appropriate given our current political and cultural climate,” said in a statement Maori Karmael Holmes, founder and artistic director of Black Star.
“Resistance,” will highlighting films that look at political and social uprisings, including the civil rights events of the 1960s, the Los Angeles race riots of the 1990s and more.
Saturday at 2 p.m., BlackStar will screen the Philadelphia premiere of actress Gabourey Sidibe’s short film The Tale of Four, which was inspired by Nina Simone’s song Four Women, as reported in Uwishunu.
