Temple University announced last Friday that they are banning the popular electric scooter balance board, nicknamed the “hoverboard” on all university campuses. This includes both residence halls and academic buildings. The decision was made in part because of the recent reports of the device catching on fire. The issue reportedly stemmed from the lithium battery that the balance board uses.

Temple is following along with other colleges across the country who have banned the device. The balance board has also been the subject of a few robberies and thefts here in Philadelphia.

In their statement, Temple did leave the possibility of reversing the ban saying, “...unless or until the university determines that appropriate standards can be implemented to reduce associated safety and fire risks.”
