Mexican comedy icon 'La India Maria' dies at 74
Iconic Mexican film and television actress Maria Elena Velasco, better known as "La India Maria," died on Friday.
“The Mexican Film Institute announced through its Twitter account that Velasco, also a screenwriter and director, died but did not specify the cause,” AP reported.
Born in the Mexican city of Puebla in 1940, her comic role “La India Maria” is recognized as an icon of Mexican cinema and was the star of dozens of films in the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s.
She filmed 21 movies and starred in the popular show "¡Ay María, qué puntería!, or "Maria, What Aim!" Her final film was 2014's "The Daughter of Moctezuma."
Mexican journalist Carlos Loret de Mola reported there will be a wake for the actress in Mexico City.
