Philadelphia native and award-winning entertainer Will Smith is receiving a lasting tribute from his hometown. City officials announced that the 2000 block of North 59th Street in West Philadelphia will soon bear the actor’s name as “Will Smith Way.”

The Philadelphia City Council unanimously approved the resolution on Feb. 27, initiated by Councilman Curtis Jones Jr. The measure seeks to honor Smith's considerable influence and global recognition that have consistently shone a spotlight on the City of Brotherly Love.

“Philadelphia has benefited from Will Smith’s continued success, bringing global attention to the city and its vibrant cultural scene,” the resolution stated. “Smith frequently showcases his love for Philadelphia through interviews, social media, and his professional projects, significantly raising the city’s profile as a creative and inspirational hub.”

Smith, 56, first gained prominence in the 1980s as a rapper alongside childhood friend DJ Jazzy Jeff. Together, they released hits such as “Summertime” and “I Wanna Rock,” earning Smith four Grammy Awards. Transitioning into acting, Smith’s illustrious Hollywood career includes starring roles in blockbusters like “Men in Black,” “Bad Boys,” “Shark Tale,” and “I Am Legend.” His portrayal of Richard Williams in the 2021 film “King Richard” earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor.

Beyond his entertainment success, the city council emphasized Smith’s extensive philanthropic efforts. He actively supports social justice, mental health awareness, education, and youth empowerment initiatives. His notable involvement includes contributions to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the Smith Family Foundation, among other organizations dedicated to uplifting underserved communities.

“Will Smith’s influence extends far beyond entertainment,” the resolution reads. “His platform has consistently advocated for important social causes, reflecting his deep commitment to his hometown and broader communities.”

The street dedication aligns with Philadelphia’s tradition of recognizing influential figures whose lives and careers have positively impacted the city’s culture and image. Details regarding the official unveiling ceremony for “Will Smith Way” will be announced in the coming weeks.
