Danny Boyle and the first high-budget film made with an iPhone 15
The successful English director Danny Boyle surprises the world once again with the news that he has just finished shooting his new film "28 Years Later", which was shot entirely with iPhone 15 devices.
This film is part of his saga that began at the turn of the century with "28 Days Later" and continued with "28 Weeks Later". It relates a series of adventures in a post-apocalyptic zombie world.
This is not the first film of its kind, since many directors around the world have already made art with smartphones. The novelty in this case is that it is the first high-budget audiovisual product shot under these circumstances. The total budget for the film is estimated at US$75 million, according to Wired, the media outlet that revealed the exclusive this week.
So far, directors like Sean Baker have made very creative forays into the use of smartphones. Tangerine, Baker's first work with these devices, was released during the Sundance Film Festival in 2015 and received very good reviews from critics.

Jeronimo Rivera, director of the Audiovisual Communication and Multimedia program at Universidad de la Sabana, said that digital technology has meant a real disruption for the film industry.
"Digitalization changes processes, lowers costs, and democratizes production, because it is no longer necessary to use very sophisticated film cameras that require photographic post-production in the studio and in the laboratory; it can now be done with very simple cameras," he explained in an interview with Al Día News.
In recent years, technological developments in smartphones have focused more on video cameras than on wireless communication capabilities. This has allowed exciting advances in definition and image and audio playback capabilities.
"In the specific case of Danny Boyle, it's very interesting that he's returning to this film -'28 years later'- and we're going to see Cillian Murphy for the first time, after Oppenheimer. The camera will allow him great versatility, completing the experience with filters, lenses, microphones, adaptations for lights, and all kinds of gadgets that turn the cell phone into a high-quality professional camera. It also makes it easier to shoot because of the size of the cell phone and the ease of handling," said Rivera.
The expert stressed that this is not a low-budget film; therefore, it is not a financial decision but an aesthetic and narrative one. "It will be interesting to see a high-budget film made with cell phones and this opens a vein for more films of this type. Rivera insisted that this kind of device has already been used in low-budget films of the 'found footage' type. In these films, the aesthetics are "a bit dirty in the image, that visual noise and more in the horror genre because the public likes it: it gives that sense of reality that sometimes the more professional cameras do not give".
Danny Boyle is recognized for his international successes such as Shallow Grave, Trainspotting, Steve Jobs, and Slumdog Millionaire, for which he received 8 Oscars, including Best Director and Best Picture.
