Breast cancer is the most diagnosed and one of the leading causes of death among women worldwide. Since 1992, The Estée Lauder Companies and its foundation have contributed more than $131 million to research and education about this disease. Evelyn H. Lauder, co-creator of the pink ribbon, inspired a global movement aimed at eliminating stigma and fostering action.
In Colombia, their partnership with the Colombian League Against Cancer has helped fund screening tests and mammograms for over 500 migrant women, contributing to a 43% global reduction in mortality over the last 10 years, thanks to early detection.
According to data from the 2022 Globocan study, more than 15,000 new cases of breast cancer are detected each year in Colombia. These figures make it one of the most prevalent cancers in the country, ranking second only to prostate cancer. Behind these numbers lies a contrasting trend: while mortality decreases due to early diagnosis, incidence is rising, particularly among younger women.
The Cuenta de Alto Costo (CAC), an entity in the health system that manages and provides comparable data to accelerate improvements in the care of people with high-cost diseases and evaluate the performance of health entities, reported that in 2023, 58,813 new cases were recorded. Most of these are located in the Central region (32.7%), the Caribbean region (20.0%), and Bogotá, D.C. (17.8%). Among women, breast cancer accounted for 49.94% of diagnoses, followed by cervical cancer (16.63%) and colorectal cancer (12.87%).
