Epidemiological Alert Due to the Increase in Measles Cases
Measles Cases Continue to Rise in the Americas
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) recently issued an epidemiological alert due to the identification of measles clusters and cases in the Americas region. As of October 5, 2024, over 14,000 suspected measles cases have been reported, with 376 confirmed in eight countries, with the United States (267 cases), Canada (82), and Argentina (11) being the most affected.
Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that can cause severe complications, especially in young children and unvaccinated individuals. PAHO has urged countries to intensify vaccination and surveillance efforts to prevent the spread of this disease. It is noted that 57% of the confirmed cases were unvaccinated, highlighting the urgent need to address vaccination coverage gaps.
In response to this situation, PAHO recommends that Member States implement active case-finding strategies, conduct supplementary vaccination activities to close existing immunity gaps, and strengthen communication with communities to promote vaccine acceptance. Additionally, travelers are advised to get vaccinated before visiting areas where measles transmission has been documented.
It is crucial for countries in the region to reinforce their surveillance systems and rapid response to any imported measles cases and achieve adequate vaccination coverage to maintain the elimination of endemic transmission of this disease.
PAHO continues to work with countries in the Americas to strengthen measles prevention and control strategies, aiming to protect public health and prevent outbreaks of this vaccine-preventable disease.
